The territory of Baunei and Santa
Maria Navarrese, a splendid combination of sea and
mountain, is very interesting from many points of view:
the coast, 40 km of limestone bastions and cliffs dotted
with little coves, from S. Maria Navarrese to Cala Luna.
Leaving from the south the most renowned spots are: The
stone peak of Pedra longa, Capo Montesanto, Portu
Quau and Portu Pedrosu, Cala Biriala, Cala
Goloritzé, Ispuligidenie(Cala Mariolu), Cala Sisine
and Cala Luna; the landscape, spectacular rugged
valleys, the basalt plateau of Golgo with Su
Sterru, Europe’s deepest chasm, Margine
characteristic limestone plateau; the fauna, several
wild species such as the golden eagle, Eleonora’s
falcon, Bonelli’s eagle, the Corsican seagull, the
moufflon, the wild boar, the hawk, the peregrine falcon,
etc; speleology, numerous caves and chasms situated both
above and below sea level near the coast; history,
necropolis, villages, fortresses and giants’ tombs from
the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods, settlements and
coins from the imperial and republican phases of Roman
history, the medieval churches of Santa Maria Navarrese
and Eltili, the Spanish tower and the church of
Golgo.
For free-climbing enthusiasts the
numerous recently equipped cliffs offer various
opportunities to climb in a unique and wild place among
rocky peaks and sheer cliffs overhanging the sea. Simply
breathtaking!
